For the past twenty years, I have been a part of the very unique Speech community, working around the world of the Natural Language Processing (NLP) field in general and Voice technologies, specifically.
I am part of the generation who made the move from the research labs to industry, developing live systems and constantly aspiring to get more and more speech applications running while continuously coming up against the disbelief and technological fears of customers.
Today, there is no doubt that speech technology works and the bigger question is how to make people use it and like it. It is questions of cultural factors coupled with linguistic issues and technological boundaries. In short Voice User Interface (VUI). VUI's goal today is to bring speech to the masses in the most natural way possible.
Remember that Speech in the most natural way to communicate, it facilitates self services not replacing people. It is enhancing service and customer satisfaction while saving money. It is that synergy between man's expertise and natural manner of communication that we aspire to accomplish on our field.
Speech Recognition Day, June 8th at Afeka Tel Aviv Academic College of Engineering, is an initiative to bring together wide array experts to discuss speech technologies. We invite you to join us in this speech celebration.
